The mission of the Heron Lake-Okabena Foundation is “to improve communities so that all our residents can enjoy economic self-sufficiency and fully participate in their communities.”

HLOCF developed a mission statement and organized as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 2001. The exclusive purpose of the HLOCF is to solicit funds and award grants to organizations that promote education and opportunities that enrich the communities of Heron Lake and Okabena. Funds are raised through fundraisers, donations, mass mailings, memorials and charitable gifting.

The first round of our annual grants was awarded in the spring of 2005, and our 4th will be awarded at the Silent Auction on March 1, 2008. The grants have been awarded to The Narrow Path Youth Ministry, The North Heron Lake Game Producers Association, Inc., The Heron Lake Day Care Center, Junior Achievement of Jackson County, SSC Wellness, HLO Women of Today, Heron Lake Emergency Medical Service and SWU Wildcat Baseball Center. We have awarded over $6,000 in grants to our community. Each year, our awards have grown because of the generosity of so many. We will award $4,200 in grants this year.

This year the signature event will feature hors d’oeuvres by Jean and Amanda Leopold, numerous items to bid on, presentation of this year’s grant awards and music by Dr. K.   We are still accepting donations, so if you have something you would like to donate, please contact Becky Cselovszki at 853-4507.  Tickets for this event are $20 per person and can be purchased from a HLOCF board member or at the SSC Elem. or SSC HS offices.
