HLOCF’s Silent Auction Takes on a New Look

This year, the Foundation Board had an auction makeover.  Survivor, Amazing Race, and other reality shows keep adding new twists to keep everyone coming back for more.  This year the silent auction was no exception.

The new look included an elegant array of hors de’oerves instead of a meal.  Who doesn’t like to try a little bit of everything?  The menu items included:  Stromboli, Spanikopita, Bruschetta, Fruit Display, Brie en croute, Ham ‘n Cheese Tasties, Salmon, Turkey Sandwiches, Chicken Tataki, Soups, Shrimp Cocktail, Stuffed Mushrooms, Scallops, and a Beef Carving Station.  That was be topped off with a Lemon Tart or a Chocolate Tort.  Wow, that’s enough to make your mouth water.  The event was catered by Jean and Amanda Leopold.

Another new twist was a dance and cash bar open to the public at the conclusion of the silent auction.  Mr. Knutson  provided the music for that portion of the evening.  In the past, people have enjoyed the evening so much that they just don’t want to go home.  Thus, the board extended the evening for community fellowship

Another twist was that ticket prices were reduced!  Community members enjoyed the evening and donated to a worthy cause for just $15!  A meal, participation in the auction, and the dance was all included.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better.  Daycare was also provided!  The United Methodist Youth Group provided this service for the evening for a free will donation.

In addition to these exciting “new looks”, we had some old favorites.   A few auction items received included:  a men’s 24 inch Huffy Bike-Coca Cola, a Nascar Leather Jacket-G & R Controls, 6 hours of painting-Cindy Scheevel, 4 tickets to a Pre-Big 10 Season Men’s Gopher Basketball Game-Brad Baumgard, Bags of Soybean Seed-Mike Madsen, Buy One Get One Free Airline Voucher-Sun Country, your choice of a parking spot at SSC HS or SSC Elem-SSC Schools, Civil War Quilt-Barb Pohlman, Tim Owen, & the Civil War Class, and a variety of Pottery-Kevin Luebben and Mr. Howard.  To see a complete list of the silent auction items click on this link:  2006 HLOCF Silent Auction Items

Developmental Specialist, Liz Frisbie, from the Southwest Minnesota Foundation spoke about the foundation.  The SW MN Foundation has partnered with the HLOCF to help "keep charitable resources in the community."

The theme this year was "Building a Community of Life-long Learners!"  This year’s grant awards were presented to three recipients.  The foundation awarded $1,800 to selected applicants.  This amount is up from $1,200 last year.  Recipients of the grants were: SSC Wellness Center, Junior Achievement of Jackson County and Heron Lake Day Care Center.    As we continue to raise funds, the amount that we can give back to the community increases.  These awards will help promote our theme and enhance our communities.
